Ford Galaxie Model
The Ford Galaxie is one of the great models Ford produced that stands as a collector today. It’s believed to be named after a European large car/minivan called the Ford Galaxy. The Ford Galaxie that was built in the United States by Ford was a full-sized car for model years 1959-1974. For 1962 models, all full-size Fords had the Galaxie badge “500” and “500/XL”, which would represent the higher series. However, the “Galaxie” prefix didn’t last all that long.

1967 Ford Galaxie LTD XL
In 1967, Ford decided to drop the name Galaxie on the 7 Litre model calling it the Ford XL or the Ford LTD XL. The Galaxie identification was mostly geared towards trim, for example the horn ring, and dashboard markings. It also was symbolized by using a “Q” in the VIN number. For this 1967 model, several changes were made including a padded steering wheel to comply with government guidelines, and Twin Comfort Lounge Seats were added as a new front seat option. The 7 Litre model was a trim and performance option for the Ford XL in 1967, making it a separate model. The engine options remained the same, offering a 240 cubic inch six-cylinder to the 428 cubic inch V8. To identify this upgraded model, some changes were made to the exterior of the car. A major bend in the center of the grille was added, making it a less “boxy” model as opposed to the 1966 version. Given these upgrades this model was bound to be a hit.
