For many classic car owners, a collector vehicle is more than just a car. It’s a connection to family, cherished memories, and moments that span generations. Whether it’s a father teaching a child how to change spark plugs, restoring a long-forgotten project together, or preserving a vehicle that has been in the family for years, these cars become part of a family’s story.

We asked members of our collector car community to share their favorite father-son memories, and we received an overwhelming response. From treasured family heirlooms and unforgettable restoration projects to lessons learned in the garage, these nine father-son stories, along with one special father-daughter story, highlight the powerful bonds that classics cars create. “If You Can Fix Her, You Can Have Her”

Fran F

When Fran was 16 years old, his father bought him a 1966 Ford Mustang for $400. He purchased it from his cousin, Joe who was the original owner of the vehicle. Upon handing the keys over, Fran’s dad told him: “if you can fix her, you can have her”.

Working alongside his dad, who was a mechanic, Fran brought the Mustang back to life. The Mustang became his daily driver throughout high school, and part of college. Since settling in Florida in 2006, the car underwent a 4-year restoration. The effort paid off when the car earned gold honors at its first show.

Today, Fran continues to display the Mustang at car shows and enjoys taking it out for the occasional Sunday drive.

A Dream Car Built Together

For Joseph’s father, a 1964 Ford Falcon was the dream car he’d always wanted.

As military veterans, they spent countless evenings and leave periods rebuilding the Falcon together, strengthening their bond through shared service and a shared love of cars. Following his father’s passing in 2019, Joseph became the steward of the car.

Now Joseph’s child is learning to care for the Falcon and ensuring the family’s story continues.

From the Woods to the Winner’s Circle

In 1984, Scott’s grandfather and father rescued a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 from the woods, where it sat with a tree growing through it. As a young boy, Scott watched as his father and grandfather completely restore the vehicle.

Forty years later, the vehicle was damaged in a fire while being worked on. During the second restoration, Scott lost both his mother and father within months of each other.

Finishing the restoration became a tribute to his family. Today, he proudly displays the Fairlane while displaying photos of its incredible journey.

The Truck That Waited Twenty Years

Chris learned to drive in his father’s 1955 Chevrolet pickup, mastering a three-on-the-tree transmission on a steep hill with a stop sign waiting at the top.

His father gave the truck to him in 2002; however, the truck sat in the garage for 20 years. Finally in September of 2025, the truck was completely restored. Now, every drive brings back memories of his father and this car.

Building a First Car Together

Duane and his son found a neglected 1973 Ford Mustang that had once been someone else’s unfinished father-son project.

Over the next year, they rebuilt the engine, repaired countless issues, upgraded components, and returned the Mustang to the road. Five years later, the car remains his son’s prized possession despite numerous offers to buy it.

Today, Duane and his son continue to share their love of classic cars together at shows.

A Show Car With a Story

Jeff F

Jeff’s father-in-law, who was a Vietnam Veteran, built his 1940 Chevy coupe in the 1990s and it meant everything to him. He placed the car in many shows across the Northeast. With his health declining, Jeff’s father-in-law placed the Chevy in storage for 10 years.

Following the 10 year hiatus, Jeff and his son began showing the car again. They take it to many different shows, and even had it featured in a hot rod magazine.

The Devil-N-Disguise Lives on

Ron R

Ron Received a 1974 Ford Pinto Wagon during his high school years. Later, while in the U.S. Air Force, his father transformed the car into “the devil-n-disguise”, installing a 350 Chevy engine, 4-speed transmission, and a GM rearend.

The car went on to win championships and awards, but its greatest value lies in the memories it holds of Ron’s father. Today, Ron is sharing those lessons with his nephew, helping cultivate another generation of enthusiast.

A High School Camaro With Big Dreams

Steven purchased a 1981 Camaro for this son while he was still in high school. What began as a simple father-son project, turned into a complete transformation featuring a powerful 454 engine and extensive upgrades.

After his son left for college, Steven continued the project, with both contributing to the car’s revival and creaming memories they will both never forget.

A Daughter’s Surprise and a Vintage VW

Not every family collector car story is about fathers and sons.

When Bill discovered a rare Volkswagen Squareback, his daughter quietly orchestrated an unforgettable surprise. Working with her mother, she convinced the seller to tell Bill the car had already been sold, then secretly purchased it as a birthday gift.

Today, father and daughter enjoy the vintage Volkswagen together, proving that a passion for collector vehicles crosses generations and genders alike.

Passing the Passion Forward

The collector car hobby is often described as preserving the automotive history, however stories like these reveals something even more meaningful. Each vehicle represents time spent together, lessons learned, challenges that were overcome, and memories made to last a lifetime.
